As the new school year nears, families across South Africa are already making plans guided by the published official school holidays that will be observed in 2026. The year is divided into four terms with well-defined intervals between them. The Early January Holidays
The school year begins on the 14th of January, after the long holidays of the previous year. This would be observed nationwide and means one important event to kick-start the academic year. Schools will close on 27th March 2026 and then reopen on 8th April 2026, after a break for students which would give a mid-quarter break during Easter.
Mid-Year Breaks and Public Holidays.

Starting from 21 July to 23 September 2026, term three concludes, having another break afterward is a short one from 24 September to 5 October 2026. With the public holiday of National Women’s Day on 10 August that falls during the school term, one can count them as an off day for the schools. The schools will open for the term’s last turn on 6 October 2026 and will close on 9 December 2026. This will allow a few weeks of a long break for the holiday just enough to allow students much more needed rest during the festive season.
